What’s Your Wallpaper Personality?

Choosing wallpaper is a little like choosing what to wear. Some of us want colour. Some want glamour. Some like a little romance. Others want something that makes guests stop mid-sentence and ask, “Where did you get THAT?”

The good news? There are no right answers.

We’ve always believed your home should be a reflection of the people who live in it - full of personality, stories and things you genuinely love. So rather than worrying about what’s “on trend”, start with a much more interesting question:

What’s your wallpaper personality?

Allow us to introduce the five types…

THE HEDONIST

More is more. And cocktails are encouraged.

You’re drawn to colour, glamour and interiors that feel like they might have a very good story to tell.

A beige feature wall was never going to cut it. Give you saturated colour, a little escapism and preferably something involving a cocktail glass.

Your home isn’t designed to behave itself - and neither are you.

THE HEDONIST’S EDIT
Sunset Dreams · Deco Martini · Club Tropikana

Your decorating move: Commit. Take the wallpaper across every wall, add fabulous lighting and don’t be afraid of mixing in another pattern. If it feels slightly too much, you’re probably getting close.

THE ROMANTIC

Florals, fantasy and a little escapism.

You’re happiest surrounded by things with a sense of history and romance.

Think sprawling gardens, trailing flowers, birds hidden amongst branches and rooms that feel as though they’ve been there forever - even if the wallpaper went up last Tuesday.

You appreciate detail and don’t mind getting lost in it.

THE ROMANTIC’S EDIT
Gardens of Amytis · Lovebirds · The Brambles

Your decorating move: Don’t feel you have to keep everything else plain. Layer your wallpaper with antiques, patterned upholstery, paintings and collected objects to create a room that feels evolved rather than overly designed.

THE WILD ONE

Good taste. Badly behaved.

You appreciate beautiful interiors. You just don’t think they need to take themselves quite so seriously.

Look closely at your walls and there might be monkeys misbehaving, animals at a soirée or something strange lurking amongst the trees.

You want a room that makes you smile - and rewards anyone curious enough to take a closer look.

THE WILD ONE’S EDIT
Safari Soirée · Drunken Monkey · Wild Wild Woods

Your decorating move: Try it somewhere unexpected. A downstairs loo, hallway, home bar or even the ceiling gives a mischievous print somewhere to really shine.

THE DRAMATIST

Why whisper when your walls can make an entrance?

You’re not frightened of bold colour, oversized pattern or a little theatricality.

In fact, the idea of a room being described as “safe” probably fills you with horror.

You gravitate towards wallpapers with presence - bold, glamorous and just theatrical enough to completely transform a space.

THE DRAMATIST’S EDIT
Zsa Zsa · Cat-titude · Stallion Rhapsody

Your decorating move: Don’t dilute the drama. Give a statement wallpaper room to perform - take it across every wall, embrace the scale and let it be the star of the room.

THE INDIVIDUALIST

You’ve never been particularly interested in what everyone else is doing.

Your interiors are collected rather than copied.

Perhaps there’s an antique you bought because it made you laugh, artwork from your travels or an inherited chair sitting happily alongside something decidedly contemporary.

Wallpaper isn’t the finishing touch to your room. It’s another layer of the story.

THE INDIVIDUALIST’S EDIT
Extinctopia · Portobello Parade · Ophelia’s Tide

Your decorating move: Forget matching. Look instead for connections - a colour picked up in a painting, a shape echoed in a piece of furniture, or an unexpected contrast that somehow just works.

STILL CAN’T DECIDE?

Good.

Choosing wallpaper should be more fun than sensible.

Order a handful of samples, pin them up and live with them for a few days. Look at them in morning light, evening light and lamplight. Move them around the room.

Not sure where to start? See our guide to getting the most from your wallpaper samples on Instagram.

And then pay attention to the one you keep coming back to.

That’s probably your wallpaper.

ONE FINAL RULE…

Your wallpaper personality doesn’t have to stay the same from room to room.

You can be The Romantic in the bedroom, The Dramatist in the dining room and let The Hedonist take complete control of the downstairs loo.

In fact, we’d encourage it.
